"Knecht" means servant in old fashioned german. The german name Landsknecht comes from "land" as difference to the swiss Reisläufer from the hills. The german king Maximilian I made his own army. Other european ruling powers paid for swiss soldiers.

Later in the "Burgunderkriegen (1474-1477)" swiss soldiers fought sucessfull in thousand man strong "Gewalthaufen". They were very effective counter against cavalry.

In 1315 "Schlacht am Morgarten" and 1386 "Schlacht bei Sempach" they used disciplined infantry with Bar weapons. Landsknecht with two-hand-sword (Zweihänder)īasically the swiss invented this style of soldier ( Reisläufer). They where the elite of the Landsknechte (fought with own weapons in the first row). Doppelsöldner are landsknechte with double payment. Im german but never heard about Doppelsöldner before AoE3 information.
